How Do Digital X-rays Work?

Pediatric dentists across the country rely on X-ray technology to help diagnose and prevent tooth decay, determine orthodontic treatment plans like Invisalign and braces, and put you and your children on track for a healthy mouth. At Elite Smiles Chastain, we offer a variety of types of X-rays, or dental radiographs, to meet the needs of all of our patients in all situations.

With Elite Smiles Chastain’s digital X-ray technology, dentists place a small electronic sensor in your our patient’s mouth to capture an image, which can be displayed instantly on a computer screen. Digital X-rays offer many advantages over the traditional X-ray films of the past. Most significantly, they reduce the amount of radiation exposure by up to 90 percent.

Why Our Atlanta Dentistry Uses Digital X-ray Technologies

Used as a diagnostic tool, X-rays taken in our Atlanta office can help Elite Smile Chastain dentists:

  • Evaluate how your child’s teeth are coming into his or her mouth
  • Identify how many of your child’s teeth are still inside the gums, along with their location and size
  • Determine if there are missing or extra teeth
  • Watch for any injuries to mouth or teeth
  • Diagnose if there is any infection in the teeth or mouth
  • Prepare treatment plans for Invisalign or other orthodontic treatment
  • Reveal challenges that you might not see with only a visual exam
  • Determine if there is any disease inside the bone
  • Pinpoint any cavities in between teeth

Types of Pediatric X-Rays

Based on what your Elite Smiles Chastain pediatric dentist or orthodontist is trying to accomplish, our doctors may order one or more of the five different types of X-rays for you or your child:

  • Bitewing X-rays — These X-rays are used to show the upper and lower back teeth that are hard to view and how the teeth touch each other, including where cavities may be starting. They also can tell dentists where bone loss has occurred from gum disease or infection. Kids usually don’t have these X-rays until they get their first permanent molar.
  • Periapical X-rays — These X-rays show deep under the gum to reveal your child’s bone structure and permanent teeth that are growing up under the baby teeth. With this X-ray, our pediatric dentists can see the entire crowns and roots of one to three teeth next to each other.
  • Panoramic X-rays — This two-dimensional (2-D) dental x-ray examination captures the upper and lower jaws, the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and the sinuses above the upper teeth. Oftentimes, dentists will order this X-ray if you or your child has hurt his or her face, has orthodontic problems, or is mentally or physically disabled. With this X-ray, there are no films that have to be put into the mouth so it’s good for kids who gag easily or who have smaller mouths. However, it does take 12-18 seconds of standing still for this X-ray to be captured.
  • Occlusal X-rays — Elite Smiles Chastain dentists use these to see most of the upper or lower teeth on one film. This is helpful if your child has difficulty taking bitewing or periapical X-rays.
  • Orthodontic X-rays — This X-Ray helps the orthodontists make a plan for braces or other orthodontic treatment. It shows the head from the side and is used to assess the growth of the jaws and the relationship of bones in the skull.

Benefits of Digital X-Rays

Besides minimizing radiation exposure, digital X-rays at Elite Smiles Chastain give both dentists and patients many benefits. These include:

  • No chemical processing & no waiting. Because there is no film to process with digital X-rays, there is no waiting for pictures to develop — and no toxic chemicals to dispose of. Our dentists can immediately show you the pictures on a computer screen for easy viewing.
  • A sharper picture. It's possible to get more information from digital X-rays because they are sharper and can be enhanced in a number of ways. The contrast can be increased or decreased, and areas of concern can be magnified. It's even possible to compare them on-screen to your previous x-Rays, making even the minutest changes to your tooth structure easier to detect.
  • Easy sharing and storage. Digital X-rays give our Elite Smiles Chastain dentists a better visual aid for understanding your diagnosis and treatment options. They can be e-mailed to different locations; they are also far less likely to be misplaced.
