The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends all children be examined by an orthodontist before seven years of age. At this age, children are actively growing, which improves the ease and effectiveness of orthodontic treatments, as well as reduces treatment time. Stability is improved because the changes made are skeletal.
Not all children need early treatment, but there are certain developmental conditions that, if treated early, can create outcomes that may not be achieved at a later age. Issues like missing or extra teeth, cross bites, open bites, crowding, large overbites and under bites can benefit from early treatment. We are now learning the significant benefits of early treatment on proper airway development, enabling us to better manage and address airway issues before they result in a lifetime of compromise.
First Visit For Adults
Adult orthodontic treatment is common today. In fact, adults make up approximately 25% of Elite Smiles Chastain’s practice, which is a higher percentage than most orthodontists. They come to see us for a variety of reasons, but one of the most common is, “Now that my kid’s braces are done, it’s my turn.”
We examine many adult orthodontic patients over the age of 50. They often have teeth that are worn and malaligned which often requires the combined efforts of Elite Smiles Chastain and their dentist. This team approach achieves results that are not only esthetic but long lasting.
We enjoy the challenge of treating adults. Dr. Sebastian has taken a special interest in adult treatment since the beginning of his practice more than 25 years ago. He is extensively trained in TMD and bite restoration, having taken many post-graduate courses at the Pankey and Spear Institutes.
Invisalign is a treatment option often recommended by Dr. Sebastian for adults, because of the results which can be achieved with this comfortable esthetic appliance.
Dr. Michael Sebastian has been practicing orthodontics since 1987. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in 1980 and completed his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry in 1985. Then, he attended the University of Washington to receive his Master of Science in Dentistry in 1987.
Dr. Sebastian dedicates much of his time to continuing education courses and seminars that directly improve the treatments he provides to patients. For instance, he has focused on improving the use of 3D technology for advanced diagnosis and treatment, and by studying at the Spears Institute, he has been able to increase the accuracy and speed of the treatments he provides. Furthermore, he subscribes to six different professional journals and a newsletter each month to help him stay as current as possible with the latest developing trends within the field.
Dr. Sebastian also believes in supporting his local community’s schools and sporting activities. He feels that staying involved helps him stay connected with the people he treats and loves keeping up with his patients as they go about their day-to-day lives. He continuously strives to build trusting and long-lasting relations with his clients.
