Adult Orthodontic Treatment

dr-patient-adultAdult orthodontic treatment is common today. In fact, adults make up approximately 25% of Elite Smiles Chastain’s practice, which is a higher percentage than most orthodontists. They come to see us for a variety of reasons, but one of the most common is, “Now that my kid’s braces are done, it’s my turn.”

We examine many adult orthodontic patients over the age of 50. They often have teeth that are worn and malaligned which often requires the combined efforts of Elite Smiles Chastain and their dentist. This team approach achieves results that are not only esthetic but long lasting.

We enjoy the challenge of treating adults. Dr. Sebastian has taken a special interest in adult treatment since the beginning of his practice more than 25 years ago. He is extensively trained in TMD and bite restoration, having taken many post-graduate courses at the Pankey and Spear Institutes.

Invisalign is a treatment option often recommended by Dr. Sebastian for adults, because of the results which can be achieved with this comfortable esthetic appliance.

Crowding

Crowding is the most problem we see in orthodontics. The teeth may be twisted or displaced. Crowding occurs when there is disharmony in the tooth to jaw size relationship or when the teeth are larger than the available space. Crowding can be caused by improper eruption of teeth and early or late loss of primary teeth. Crowding is the lack of space for all the teeth to fit normally within the jaws. If you have crowded teeth and you want them straight then you have to make room. There are three ways to make room, expand the teeth, IPR (interproximal reduction) or extract.

Interproximal Reduction (IPR) is a quick and easy procedure used for crowding where very precise tools are used to change the shape and size of your teeth, primarily on the sides where they touch each other. This is done for three reasons. First, the upper or lower teeth may be naturally the wrong size and don’t fit together well. Second, the shape of individual teeth may not allow them to lay next to each other ideally. This can adversely affect the appearance of a smile even though the bite may fit perfectly. Third, IPR is used in cases of mild crowding so that the removal of teeth can be avoided.

Spacing

Spacing is an excess of space for your teeth which results in gaps between your teeth. This generally occurs when the teeth are smaller than the available space. Spacing can also be caused by protrusive teeth, missing teeth, or impacted teeth.
