What is a “Tongue Thrust?”
10/01/2018
Orthodontics is most commonly associated with correcting misaligned teeth, but we can also prevent teeth from becoming misaligned. Teeth can naturally become misaligned as we grow and mature, but other factors can cause teeth to become misaligned as well. One of these habits we commonly see at our orthodontic and pediatric dental practice in Chastain park is tongue thrusting.

How We Determine If A Child Suffers From SDB
04/08/2018
There have been correlations observed between upper airway development and orthodontics. At our Chastain Park orthodontic and pediatric dental office, we see children in the age range of 4-7 years old who potentially have SDB. This is the age range which is the best time to evaluate for airway disorders and our recall programs allow for easy follow-up. Along with orthodontic diagnosis, our cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans can be used for airway evaluation with a high degree of accuracy. We recently upgraded to the highest quality with the lowest radiation exposure Carestream 9300 CBCT. This advanced machine allows us to get highly detailed images of our patient’s jaw and airway structures like the one found above. This, paired with our years of orthodontic and dental experience with children help us determine if a patient has SDB.

Does Your Child Snore?
03/05/2018
At Elite Smiles Chastain, Dr. Sebastian and his team of orthodontic experts have dedicated their lives to bettering children’s health through orthodontic treatments. One aspect of children’s health often overlooked is their breathing habits while sleeping. If your child frequently snores, has heavy labored breathing, or stops breathing for short intervals, they are at a high risk for Sleep Disorder Breathing (SDB). This nighttime syndrome most often occurs when a narrow airway constricts further or even collapses during sleep. As a result, limited airflow moves from the mouth to the lungs all night long. The brain’s normal sleep cycle is then disrupted, so memories and emotions of the day aren’t stored properly and the brain doesn’t build and repair to its maximum potential. The body is deprived of the oxygen it needs to regenerate and generate new growth to its maximum potential.
